Quick tip if you want to use sendmail and saslauthd instead of postfix:

mkdir /etc/sasl

echo pwcheck_method\: saslauthd > /etc/sasl/Sendmail.conf

and add these packages:

libsasl2

libsasl2-modules

sasl2-bin

I'm not going to admit how long it took me to find this...
