Wondering if there are any timelines on the new Zimbra Appliance?

The TKL devs prefer not to disapoint so tend to follow the Debian example of releasing 'when ready' rather than on a schedule. They currently have a todo list that seems to have stuff added faster than they can get through it so don't hold your breath. Having said that I know that they are currently working on part 2 of the v11.x release and IIRC they mentioned at one point that as the Zimbra appliance should have ideally been part of the part 1 release it is high on their build queue. So hopefully soon :)

any updates on the new zimbra appliance?  it has been 3 years

I know it has been awhile but I know the devs haven't just been sitting on their hands. From my understanding, they have been focusing their energy on a major rewrite of the back-end build infrastructure (which is the bootle-neck to releasing new appliances). AFAIK the plan is that once this has been resolved they can release new stuff much faster. This should include other builds too such as 64 bit and hopefully even other VM technologies such as OVZ and/or LXC. The downside of this approach is that other than some updates to the Hub, TKLBAM and some other AWS integration stuff (which I gather is/will be relevant to the new backend model) very little has happened as far as updated and new appliances.

The added complication with Zimbra is that recent builds require 64 bit base (which currently TKL doesn't have) so the updated Zimbra relies on 64 bit appliances to be produced. Hopefully we will see something not too far away. But seeing as we are only 6mths out from the next LTS (Ubuntu 12.04 - due April next year) perhaps rather than do the work twice they may just rebase the updated Zimbra on that?

And bottom line is that if having an updated Zimbra appliance is mission critical to you, then perhaps you can contact the core devs and sponsor it's production?

I am sure I can find the info if I looked hard enough but if I wanted to sponsor a fix or get something done via the sponsored route - where do I go?

But I can't seem to find it now. Perhaps it disappeared somewhere along the line (there have been a number of major website upgrades since I last saw it). Anyway, in the meantime I'd suggest that you contact either (or both) of the core devs. Their email addresses are firstname@turnkeylinux.org (Alon or Liraz).

Unfortunately, we can't accept any consulting/contract gigs because our plates are already way too full. We've been routing requests for this sort of thing to TurnKey community member Adrian Moya. Recommend you talk to him.

But I don't think it'll be anytime soon. As mentioned previously Zimbra now requires 64 bit, so until we see a 64 bit TKL Core released as a beta then it suspect it is quite a while away... Sad I know.

The Zimbra appliance has fallen by the wayside. I'm not sure what state Zimbra is currently in, but asuming that it is alive and well then I expect we will see a revivied Zimbra server appear with, or soon after the v13 release.

Let's hope that we see some other mail platforms too. Not everyone needs all that Zimbra offers...

I ended up going wth 01.com  and I have found it quite remarkable in terms of speed and function  (most of which is Zimbra, but they do the upgrading, backups, give tech support etc).

Bottom line it costs about what a commercial Gmail/Google Mail account costs (your own domain).  For me though the thumbs up that started the comparison is that Google does not have access to My Email so they would not be profiling me to the huge depth that their hosting our email would allow.

There are some Zimbra Appliances out there if folks want to host their own.  Zimbra lists it.  I believe, however, that the Open Source version does not do "Active Synch" ala MS Exchange / Android / IPhone super hot synching.  That side on a Computer is quite good (I like Zimbra Desktop)...  On my Android it needs some work.  Zimbra has not released anything (that I know of yet) through Google Play, but they do have a "Fling Version" you can install.  Works ok, but has this irritating need to "allow it to work" on a daily basis.

All else though, great stuff.  www.01.com is a good host also.

I'd be very interested in seeing a Zimbra appliance.

I had to replace an older running version of the Zimbra appliance that I had going for quite a few years so I tried to download Zimbra from their website and install it on a Turnkey Core image.  The problem is that their packages aren't fully compatible with the base TurnKey OS.  At least it didn't seem that way when I was doing it.  I kept getting errors about missing packages and stuff like that.  Maybe they released some new install packages on the zimbra site since then.

Long story short, I ended up installing it on an Ubuntu 14.04 64-bit server with Duplicity.  It's similar to the TKL setup, but maybe not as streamlined.  I saw a tutorial on how to backup Duplicity to S3 somewhere a while back.  I just back it up to a FTP server on my network though.

I do hope a new appliance comes out eventually.  I would prefer to backup to the cloud like all the rest of my machines.

I don't much are about the backup btu about the easy of installing an existing appliance vs. manually.

You can configure duplicity to backup to the cloud if that is your issue, its not difficult.

And although Zimbra don't officially support Debian; Ubuntu is so close to Debian that I'm sure it shouldn't take too much bending to get it to work.

I won't offer any promises, but if I get some time I might at least have a look at installing it (on Core) at least. Even if I can get it installing and running then that might be a good start for someone else to build on to create the appliance build code. After all, in essence appliance build code is really just a streamlined scripted install...

[update] I just had a quick google and although I can't find any tutorials to install it on Debian Jessie; Ubuntu 14.04 is very similar. All the dependencies explicitly stated in this tutorial are installable in Debian (I double checked). I guess though perhaps Zimbra needs specific versions? Or maybe there are some other dependencies that Zimbra needs that it auto installs? Out of interest do you recall what the problematic dependencies were?

Ovidiu Pacuraru's picture

I don't recall any problems. I'm just goign to install zimbra on a test server. IF I like it I might isntall it again for production. And maybe for a friend too. Why go through 3x the same effort when an appliance would be so much easier?
That is my sole motivation for asking I must admit :-)
