Please see the blog post I put up a couple of days ago for a workaround/fix. FWIW I sent out an email notification immediately after posting that.

Once reinstalled, MariaDB functionality should return to normal.

Also @Thys, I just checked your user account and it seems that you've been signed up for ages and are subscribed to the "security and news announcements" so you should have got an email notification about that a couple of days ago?! I suggest that you check your spam folder and/or your email settings as you should have received the email.

I've just opened another topic, but the issue is the same. A debian security update killed MariaDB.

I can create a new VM with MariaDB and make it work after removing and reinstalling MariaDB, but the existing ones are dead. Can't make backup of the database because it only works if we clean the data directory.

Thanx a million Jeremy your fix (update and re-install of mysql/mariadb) worked 100% ...

Whilst this likely won't make much difference to you good people, I'd thought it worth mentioning that we have now updated all of our appliance images, including Redmine so this fix should now no longer be required on fresh appliance installs.
