Hi,

Chances are if you're reading this, you have applied for a TurnKey website user account.

Considering that 95% of all signups are spammers and/or seo farmers, plus the hammering the site has got from spammers earlier in the year, blocking auto signups was probably overdue. However, it can be really hard to tell the difference between a potential spammer and a legitimate user. So I'm almost certain that I delete legitimate accounts when I cleanup the obvious spammer ones.

So this thread has 2 main purposes:

  1. A place where prospective users, waiting for account approval, can introduce themselves, share a little about what they are using TurnKey for and demonstrate that they are a legitimate human; and
  2. A place where TurnKey users who are looking for support can post their question(s)/issue(s) while they are awaiting account approval.

Intro post

The first is pretty self explanatory, but I anticipate that spammers and seo farmers will want to try to game the system and will likely post friendly messages in the hope that they will convince me. So if you fit into this category, please be sure to mention specifically which appliance you are running (or plan to run) and on what platform. Also if you can give some context to your username and/or email, that might help me too. I'm not going to go into what sort of things I use to tell the difference (because spammers will adapt their behaviors) but I'm hoping that this will give some solid hints for legit users, but won't get read by too many spammers. One thing I can say is that the more detail you share, the harder it is to "fake" it, the more specific you can be, the less likely you are to be a spammer.

Guest support post

For the second category, please be sure to include lots of info. The reason for that is two-fold. Firstly, so I can tell you're not faking it to try to get your spam account enabled. Secondly, so that we can provide a useful response (rather than just asking you more questions). Definitely include the specific TurnKey appliance and version that you are using (and/or the output of 'turnkey-version'), plus details of the problem you are experiencing or thing you are trying to do but need advice on. Please provide as much info as possible.

Final words

If you're still reading, I'm almost certain that you aren't a spammer. Please post a new post below (as a guest). In the provided space for email address (which won't be publicly visible), please be sure to include the same email as you used for your account signup. Please note that your post may need to be manually reviewed before it is public visible.

Note too that support type posts will be moved. Other posts might be cleaned up from time to time too, so please don't be put off if there are no posts below.

Hello!  I just started using the TurnKey Linux containers today in ProxMox and am trying to make this account so I can get an API Key for gameserver's DDNS and the backup & migration api calls.  Anyway, my username's been around since 1998.  Created it to play chess on games.yahoo.com/chess, lol

Thanks for your time, this post was a great help!

Hi supercon99, apologies on the slow turnaround (or at least the slow response). I have approved your new TurnKey website user account and reposted your question as a new thread (perhaps overkill, but oh well...).

Hi,

I'm Nick. I'm using TKL fileserver because I want to share a Proxmox volume using SMB / Samba. I store video files, and want Davinci Resolve to auto create smaller 'proxy' files.

Thanks!

Hello, At this moment i try to migrate my website from Xampp to Turnkey version 17.1. I ran into an issue to replace the SSL certificate which i am using now on Xampp. cabundle.crt , server.crt, server.key. I bought this certificate form my hosting provider and i want to use it in Turnkey, but in Turnkey i saw that i can only use a PEM certificate. Is it possible to replace the default certificate to my own certificate and how can i do that. I tried using the following link, but i get a lot of errors, but no SSL. https://www.turnkeylinux.org/docs/confconsole/letsencrypt Also when trying to run the entire Joomla site on https i get the following error: HTTPS has not been enabled as it is not available on this server. HTTPS connection test failed with the following error: fsockopen(): unable to connect to ssl://X.X.X.X:443 (Unknown error)

Hi all, Just another new homelabber here. I've been playing around with proxmox over the last year - mostly strengthening my networking knowledge and looking at standing up services. Part of that has been learning about LXCs and docker containers, so of course I had to look into TKL. Looking to see what the API key and backup thing is all about.
Jeremy Davis's picture

Hi Cameron, your account is now live and I sent an email to you.

Hmos's picture

Hello everyone. I just recently created my first Proxmox environment and have failed to properly configure Wireguard for the last 2 days (much frustration, still don't know what went wrong after ruining a Proxmox install). I ran in to the Turnkey CT templates being mentioned on a Reddit post so I thought I would check it out. I would like to get API access to leverage backups and the DNS service for my WG CT. Looks like there are a lot of services here that I plan on using for some other resume building projects (MySQL, Jenkins, MongoDB, NGINX). Hope to get approved to make use of all of your plethora of services. My username is a shortened version is my real name, which there are slight variations of for different services accross the web.
Jeremy Davis's picture

Your new TurnKey website account is now active. I also sent you an email.

Please feel free to start new thread(s) for any questions/concerns/issues/feedback you have.

Hello. When changing locale in admin interface in Tracks, I'm getting a message
We're sorry, but something went wrong. If you are the application owner check the logs for more information
and cannot return back. Every time I log, I'm getting this message. Is there something I'm missing? This is reported too in the tracks issue tracker by other users https://github.com/TracksApp/tracks/issues/2690 (tried to change to 'es', locales for es-UTF8 are generated in the container using the initial setup procedure) Regards!
Jeremy Davis's picture

Hi kinu. Welcome to TurnKey. Firstly, your website user account has been created (using the email you used for this post). I st a random password so you'll need to reset your password to be able to log in.

Regarding the issue you are reporting, I can't reproduce it? I just tested and I can change the language to 'es' in the Tracks UI and it appears to work fine?! I tried logging out and back in again and still it just works...

Obviously you aren't the only one experiencing this issue, but there must be something specific that you (and the others hitting this issue) are (or aren't) doing and/or something that I am (or aren't) doing to not be able to reproduce it.

So I suggest that you start a new thread in the support section and provide more information about your install (which version, where it is running, etc) and step-by-step instructions to reproduce the issue. If I can reproduce the issue, then I'm sure I can fix it.

kinu's picture

I was using release 16.1-1. This is fixed in release 17.1-1, so all ok now. Thank you!

I am hoping to get the File Server up and running so I can migrate off of my WD_PR4100.  I wish there was a cloudflared Turnkey app, but I suppose I cna just use a linux distro lxc and configure it there.
Jeremy Davis's picture

I'm not clear what you mean by "cloudflared TurnKey app"?!

If you have any problems and/or feedback for us, please feel free to start a new thread.

Arcen Group's picture

Just created our account. Please accept the application so we can check on the TKLBAM config for migration purpose.   TIA
Jeremy Davis's picture

Hi Raul, your TurnKey website user account has been created, using the email you used here. I set a random password, so you'll need to reset that before you can log in.

Having said that, if you want to use TKLBAM you will need a (separate) TurnKey Hub account. Also, please be aware, that whilst TKLBAM can still be useful in transferring data between instances, depending on the age of your old server, you may well still need to make some adjustments manually. Please check out the TKLBAM doc page for a bit more context and detail.

If you want a hand with anything and/or have questions or feedback, please feel free to start a new thread.

Draco Ren's picture

Is this possible? Install LAMP on linux with Browser interface like Turnkey Linux I am trying to get a Turnkey LAMP webstack vm running on virtualbox in a debian host. Or inside a debian or fedora qube in Qubes OS. Achieved installing on Virtualbox VM in a Windows host by using the iso from Turnkey Linux website. The same technique is not working for linux or qubes VMs because of virtualbox issues. Any relevant help much appreciated.
Jeremy Davis's picture

Hi Draco, your account has been created. I set a random password, so you'll need to reset that before you can log in.

Re your question, TBH, I'm not completely sure what the issue might be. I'm a Linux daily driver and test our ISOs in KVM, VirtualBox and VMware WorkStation (all on Linux - Debian to be precise) and they "just work" for me?! FWIW I have hit intermittent issues with the Grub install step when installing on VMware, but that can be worked around by selecting "manual" and entering the device name manually (e.g. '/dev/sda'). AFAIK Qubes OS uses KVM.

I suggest that you start a new thread and provide some more detail about what you tried and what specific issues you hit, e.g. explicit error messages, etc.

Matt Roslevich's picture

I am signing up for a turnkey account just to ask questions about my turnkey appliance i set up. I'm not a bot :D Bots totally wouldn't say that.
Matt Roslevich's picture

My use case is the Redis turnkey appliance. I have issues after first boot, and I want to sign up for an account so that I can see if anyone has any ideas for what could be happening.
Jeremy Davis's picture

If you are running in an LXC container (e.g. on Proxmox), you will need to run it in an unprivileged container with "nesting" enabled. Without that, Redis will have issues starting.

Otherwise, please start a new thread describing your issue(s) - the info you can give the better. If I can reproduce the issue, there is a really good chance I can work out how to resolve it (or at least hack around it).

PS apologies about ridiculously slow response. I've been very distracted over the last month (mostly non-TurnKey stuff - but I have been doing some work on the upcoming v18.x release).

Gebhard Stopper's picture

Howdy, I just created a new account and am waiting for approval. I'm runnung some (old) TLK File Servers that need to be migrated and need an API key to setup TLKBAM.   Cheers, Gebhard
Jeremy Davis's picture

Firstly, apologies on such a slow response...

If you want a Hub API key, you'll need to sign up to the TurnKey Hub.

Please note that depending on how old your server is, you will likely still need to do some manual tweaks to get your data migrated and your new server up and running. The TKLBAM doc page (scroll down to third paragraph, between the horizontal lines) - gives some guidance on the expectations you can have of a TKLBAM data migration.

If it doesn't just work (which seems likely if it's quite old), please do not hesitate to open a new support thread. The more info you can give me about the appliance and the migration, and as much detail as possible about the actual issue - the easier it will be to assist you.

I'm trying to setup anew user account. I thought I'd try out your LXC containers in my home lab prior to any move to any production/subscription in the office. The API for config BU is appealing, so the account is desired. Thanks!
Jeremy Davis's picture

Hi Shawn, apologies on such a slow response (I've had lots on and have only had time and energy for paid support lately - hopefully I can get back on top of the forums really soon...).

Anyway, welcome to TurnKey and please do not hesitate to start a new thread if you have any questions, concerns, issues and/or feedback for us.

[edit] PS apologies that I didn't directly address your note re API key. To get an API key, you'll need to sign up for a separate TurnKey Hub account.

Hello everyone, I installed the lxc torrent container on proxmox and I'm trying to figure out what's what, please activate the account so that I can specify the api there
Jeremy Davis's picture

Apologies on my slow response...

Your website account is now live and ready to go.

With regards to the Torrent Server, it should "just work". So if you have any problems, questions and/or feedback (regarding the Torrent Server, running LXC containers and/or anything else TurnKey related) please do not hesitate to start a new thread.

If you want an API key, you'll need to sign up for an account via the TurnKey Hub (the Hub has a completely separate user management system).

Maglin's picture

Been using turnkey LXC containers for a little while on my ProxMox cluster.  I just installed another Core to run a few game servers on and decided to get an account to be able to use the webmin to see what it even looks like.  I really love the turnkey core as it has all I need for most applications.  Thank you.
Jeremy Davis's picture

Hi Maglin, welcome to TurnKey. Apologies on such a slow response...

If you want to enable TKLBAM (our remote, encrypted backup tool) or other TurnKey Hub features, you'll need to sign up for a separate TurnKey Hub account (the Hub has a completely separate user database).

Having said that, you can use Webmin without a Hub API key. You can use the left hand menu to jump straight to other pages. Also our Webmin doc page notes how to change the default landing page (regardless of whether you use TKLBAM or not, you may wish to set a different default landing page). Hopefully that helps?!

Maglin's picture

Been a user of TurnKey LXC Core for some time.  Installed another one today and decided to try out this TKLM stuff.  Thank you for what you have provided to the community.  This is post two and probably not going to post as I have zero clue how to post as a guest.   -Maglin

Thank you for your kind words. Hopefully I answered all your initial questions in my previous response to you.

Petr's picture

Hi Jeremy, I was using Nextcloud in Docker for several years, now I have started playing with Proxmox server. In the net, they say that I should not run docker in lxc (and I do not want to start vm for this use case), I decided to set up Nextcloud TKL. The Fail2Ban combined with Bruteforce protection of NC was a headache at the beginning. Now happy and running. Secondly, my wife has decided to start toying with Wordpress - so I spun up TKL for her. It is really amazing how easy that one was (as compared to NC). I have read here, that I need a separate account at HUB... Let's finish this and move over there... Cheers for the good work. Petr
Jeremy Davis's picture

Hi Petr, welcome to TurnKey and apologies for my slow response...

Thanks for your kind words, although I'd be interested to hear more about the issues you had getting Nextcloud up and running. It should "just work"!? I'm glad to hear that WordPress was a bit more "TurnKey" for you.

Regarding the API key, that is optional. For self hosted servers, the Hub "Servers" are probably not that useful, but the remote encrypted backups (aka TKLBAM) should work from anywhere so long as your server has outgoing internet. FWIW TKLBAM can be used to migrate data between servers too. If you have any further Hub related questions, please don't hesitate to ask (here and/or via Hub support).

I hope that helps and good luck. If you have any further questions or feedback, please don't hesitate to start a new thread! :)

Jeremy Davis's picture

Hi Siggi, apologies for slow response.

I only speak English, so I used Google Translate to translate your text and here is what I got:

Hello, I'm new here and I'm trying to install the iso: turnkey-nextcloud-17.2-bullseye-amd64.iso but it fails after installing the grub bootloader. After installation, the PC does not boot from the hard disk, even though only one is installed. Anyone an idea? and I am waiting for the account to be activated.

Could you please share some more info about where you are trying to install? Are you installing to a VM? If so, what software platform? If you're installing to bare metal, then that could be the issue perhaps? FYI our installer should work fine with most older hardware, but can have issues with newer hardware.

If you are still struggling and/or interested in following this up further, please start a new thread and I'll respond ASAP.

PS if you wouldn't mind posting in English if possible, that would be fantastic. Or if you aren't comfortable with English, then write your post in German, but then use an online translation service (such as Google Translate) and post a translation as well. That will make my life a bit easier. Thanks! :)

Siggi's picture

When and how do you activate an account? Kind regards and waiting for the release!
Jeremy Davis's picture

Sorry to keep you waiting. As I just posted above, you're up and running now.

FYI I try to do it at least once every couple of days, but this last month has been a bit crazy. I have had some (non TurnKey related) crisis to deal with lately. I'm pretty sure I'm over the worst of it now and am in the process of trying to get back on top of it all...

Hello Team,   I have been trying to test the Zoneminder as per the Youtube link below: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=QYFnbZgBZSM   Downloaded several ISO images and wrote them to a USB disk but they are not booting. Used Balena etcher  and rufus but they are not booting.   Ask: - is there something I need to do to get bootable ISOs? - Am I missing an steps but I didn't see anything about the ISOs. Thank you for assistance.
Jeremy Davis's picture

Your TurnKey website user account is now live. Apologies on the delays getting that set up for you. You'll need to reset the password before you can log in, otherwise you should be good to go.

WRT to "burning" the ISO to USB, it should "just work"!? On Linux it's super easy, you literally just copy the ISO to the USB device. E.g. if the USB is /dev/sdb (make sure you use the right device and be sure to unmount the USB if it's already mounted) then this should "just work":

cp /path/to/turnkey-zoneminder-17.2-bullseye-amd64.iso /dev/sdb

Having said that, my guess is that you aren't using Linux, so that's likely not of much value. I have never heard of, nor used Balena etcher - but a quick google suggests that it should be more than capable of doing what is required. I haven't used it for years, but Rufus was always pretty good in my experience.

Our ISO is pretty basic and the fact that you tried 2 options suggests to me that the issue may be that your hardware is too new for our installer. If you're still interested in floowing up on this, please start a new thread and provide some more info on the issue you're encoutnering, including the hardware you're trying to us, any specific error messages you see, etc. Please also feel free to attach screenshots to your post (please note that you've done that and I'll tweak them so they display).

Whilst our ISO does support hardware install, it doesn't have great hardware support and doesn't support UEFI boot at all. Most older hardware will allow you to change to a "legacy boot" mode (and you'll also need to disable "Secure Boot" too). So I'd try that (you'll need to poke around in your UEFI/BIOS for the relevant options).

If it seems that hardware incompatibility is the issue, then in my opinion, your best bet is to install it as a VM. If you have some hardware that you particularly want to use for this project, I'd recommend installing a hypervisor, such as ProxmoxVE. Then just install TurnKey Zoneminder as a VM. Note that on Proxmox you could download our LXC template instead, but I recommend a "proper" VM for minimal fuss.

Hi there. FWIW your other post showed up too (it's just that they were both flagged as needing explicit approval by me before being published).

I have created a new website account for you. You'll just need to reset the password and you should be good to go.

For the DDNS service, you'll need to sign up to the TurnKey Hub. Note that you'll need an AWS account and need to start a free trial of the most popular paid plans we offer. However, you can cancel the free trial by downgrading both the server and backup plans to free.

Another option is that under the hood, TurnKey is based on Debian GNU/Linux. So any DDNS client should be an option. Many DDNS providers and even some Domain registrars provide their own client and/or recommend a specific client.

If you'd like to discuss more, please open a new thread and we'll go from there.

I'm a private person, hence the username. I keep a tiny footprint. Alpine tiny. Tiny Core tiny.  I'm a lurker in the corner, quiet, keeping an "eye" on everything and everyone. Such a waste of time. They ruin it always. Switched to Linux full time (finally). Old (and bitter lol) IT admin since DOS. Looking to TKL to modularize and save time. Time is more valuable than money. I don't like to post. I don't spam. Ever. I barely chat. Too focused. Quickly Approve please. Many Thanks. FOSS FTW. That is all.

Sorry that it was a bit of a pain, but your account is now live and you're good to go.

Whilst you may prefer not to post, please do not hesitate to ask if you have questions and/or want my 2c on stuff. I'd also be super appreciative if you have any feedback that you'd like to share. I can't guarantee that I will cater to every suggestion you have, but I always love to hear when things don't work as they should or what rough edges we might be able to smooth, etc. So your seasoned input would be very appreciated.

Or are you just wanting to improve your SEO?

I hate to be rude, but a huge amount of the SEO spam that was getting posted was from your country so I'm a bit skeptical.

If you are genuinely interested in TurnKey, please share a bit more about what you hope to achieve with it and how you plan to use it.

Hi there, I am doing a home webserver with Turnkey for a home CCTV. I would like to create a backup and for that I need the API  key, please. Looking forward to hearing from you soon. Kind regards, Marta de Souza

Hi Marta. To get a Hub API key, you need to sign up for a Hub account (the user systems are separate).

I have also enabled your TurnKey website account (if you want to post on the forums again).

If you have further struggles signing up to the Hub, please reach out via support AT turnkeylinux.org - or use the chat box in the bottom right corner of any page on the Hub.

Yep.   Retired IT person.  36 years,  years working in IT (not my age, i started when i was 10 haha) Now i work for myself and chose to not make any money because thats real work.    Started with Home Assistant (continue to buy devices every couple of weeks).   Added a Intel NUC for Proxmox.   Now attempting to install docuwiki for all my loose notes stored everwhere.

Welcome to TurnKey.

That sounds pretty cool. So long as you can support your lifestyle, I agree. I work on/with TurnKey full time, but similar to you, it's not about the money (if it was I'd be doing something else, earning much, much more). TurnKey is my passion and I'm pretty lucky to be able to choose to do a job I love.

Please feel free to open a new thread if you have issues or questions. Hopefully DocuWiki will "just work" for you! If not please ask. Also any other feedback you have for us, please share.

hey there!

I just signed up on your site the other day, as your offerings seem right up my alley.

I'm pretty new to the HomeLab world, and slowly testing out different VMs and LXCs on my Proxmox VE installation. I'd been struggling to get WireGuard running, so your solutions are greatly appreciated. I mostly want to take advantage of the backup/migration toolkit; and maybe pick some people brains on passing connections from a container thru my Turnkey VPN

thanks again!

Hey there. Seems I am one of many testing your creations in Proxmox for home/business lab purposes.  I am currently doing some R&D on low profile server machines to utilize for my MSP business in small and medium businessscapes. So I might have one of the most vague descriptions but if I could get some more specific details from clients I wouldn't have to trial out machines that could do anything from track employee punches to managing the space launch. 🙃😭 But I am a real person in the sunny state of Florida and am looking forward to trial out your chitlins for the foreseeable future!   -Cori

Hello, I am in fact a real person.

In 2020 I bought a used PC and setup Linux on it and docker and I've used it ever since to manage some applications SSH so i could login my network, OpenVPN so I could securely access my systems, then I installed filerun & nextcloud to share files securely, and I have put NPM in front to handle web traffic.  Plus it does a bunch of other stuff.

I have found that it gets a little challenging to manage all of the data & backups because every docker container sets up its own database and that data is everywhere.  Its convenient to quickly standup, but more challenging to manage.  Similarly I have a bunch of raspberries doing things like downloading files, and acting as my backup server (rsync over SSH)

So I bought another used desktop last week and decided to try Proxmox on it so I could learn about that.  I thought it was just about VMs then I discovered LXC and I am learning about that now and that led me here.

So nothing too serious but that is why I attempted to create an account.

hello just registered trying to use mine os with proxmox

Jeremy Davis's picture

Hi Sumner, welcome to TurnKey.

It is perhaps worth noting, that whilst MineOS is based on TurnKey, we didn't create it. I did speak with the dev who created it about making it an "official" TurnKey image, but the conversation stalled and never got revisited.

So if you have Minecraft specific questions, there's a good chance I won't be able to help, but I can assist with underlying TurnKey Linux questions.

If you want to get an API key and use TKLBAM, then you'll need to sign up for a (separate) TurnKey Hub account (the user databases are separate).

Please feel free to start a new thread if you have any further questions or feedback for us.

Hi.

I'm Mike and I'm a systems engineer who has recently started hosting services at home due to privacy concerns. I use Proxmox to test configurations services easily. I'm currently running two proxmox servers on site at home VPN'd to a VPS with a public ip that runs docker.

My username is in ralation to an old joke from highschool about making up aliases for ourselves, eugene rockafella stuck. I registered the domain savvysystems.tech one night on a whim and use it for personal endevours, I may use it as a business name oneday but I also may not.

Let me know if you require further humanity evidence.

Mike.

Hey guys.

Trying to move away from my hosting company and have now moved my small site time and time again, successfully, but it's a bit of a nag.

Just trying Proxmox on a self-hosted machine and installed your container template. Well, it would be rude not to try your services, wouldn't it? :-)

I'd be greatful for my account to be activated at your earliest convenience.

I promise to keep to the Debian code of conduct and not take the (you know what) nor to overstay my welcome.

I come in peace.

All the best,

Wagner

25+ years in IT, have used AWS, GCP, Azure, but never really an on prem virtualization system.  So I'm new to Vmware, Proxmox, etc.  I'm setting up a Proxmox lab with 8 hosts totalling 448 cores, 2tb ram, 16tb ssd, 200tb hdd (cephfs&rbd), a handful of Tik switches and routers and more wires than I count.

I started doing some trial VM and container installations and quickly grew weary at the notion of installing a bunch of linux machines from scratch just to run basic workloads like lamp and ansible semaphore.  In comes turnkey, wow how easy!

I anticipate participating in the forum throughout my process that I hope will eventually grow into a semi-production environment backed up by a few AWS instances that will fire if I have a catastrophic event affecting my physical hosts.

Jeremy Davis's picture

Apologies that I hadn't explicitly responded to you sooner. I'm not sure how, but it looks like whilst I enabled your account, I didn't reply to your post (as I intended to).

Anyway, warm albeit belated welcome to TurnKey.

Your plans sound great and I'm a bit pumped and honored that you're considering TurnKey for the purpose.

Please do not hesitate to start a new thread if you have any support issues, questions or feedback (e.g. suggestions for improvements etc).

As you may already be aware, we have an AWS based SaaS platform called the TurnKey Hub. The Hub incorporates management of backups/data generated via our built in automated encrypted backup tool, TKLBAM, as well as a user friendly platform for launching and managing TurnKey "Cloud Servers" (AWS EC2 instances). That has a separate user DB, so you'll need to sign up to that separately. If you go ahead with that on one of the paid plans, you are then eligible for our "paid" support (accessible within the Hub, or email via support AT turnkeylinux.org).

Good luck with it all and I look forward to hearing more about how your setup progresses and/or any pain points you hit that perhaps we can improve on.

I am new to Turnkey - having just deployed Proxmox 8.0.3 over the weekend.  Proxmox has a great selection of Turnkey LXC container templates and several are of great interest, including turnkey-ansible, zoneminder, and samba domain controller.

I was testing TrueNAS Scale but it seems Proxmox + Turnkey is a better combination of services.

Please consider accepting my registration.

Thank you.

Hi,

I just applied for an account.

I am a real human, merely trying to upgrade my Turnkey Ansible appliance to the latest version.

My current version is turnkey-ansible-16.1-buster-amd64, running in a proxmox container. I'm thinking to migrate my data to turnkey-ansible-17-something running with Bullseye.

In order to do so, if I understand correctly, I need the tklbam tool, which would only work with a proper account.

Many thanks,

Elise

Jeremy Davis's picture

Hi Elise, welcome to TurnKey.

Firstly, to clarify, you don't NEED to use TKLBAM, but it is what we recommend and technically the only method we support (despite that, I'll happily give you "best effort" support).

If you want to give TKLBAM a go, you'll need to sign up for the TurnKey Hub separately (the user DB is separate to the website).

It's worth being aware, that under the hood, TurnKey is Debian (v16.x = Debian 10/Buster; v17.x = Debian 11/Bullseye, he upcoming v18.x = Debian 12/Bookworm). So a "Debian style in place upgrade" is an alternate option. It's not as smooth as it could be (e.g. you'll need to manually download the updated TurnKey apt signing key), but it is possible. I hope to make it smoother in future, but not sure when I'll get to that, my todo list is huge!

Anyway, good luck with it all and please don't hesitate to open a new thread if you have any questions or feedback for us.

Elise_admin's picture

Thanks for your answer and additional details!  I might try the Debian style upgrade, then :) Have a good day, Elise

I recently setup a home lab to play and learn with!  I was told to try running containers with Proxmox, which is where I found out about TurnkeyLinux.  So far things are going well , except I noticed today that when I try to run the apt update command, I continuously get stuck at "connecting to archive.turnkeylinux".  Is the update server down, or am I doing something wrong?  It seemed to be working fine for the last 2 or 3 days, but I am still very new to this.

Thanks for any help or advice you can offer!!

As for helping out, we're always keen for members of the community getting involved and helping out. I suggest that you familiarize your self first, then scratch your own itch (e.g. something that you think would be better, a feature we should add, etc). Having said that, it's probably a good idea to have a bit of a chat about your plans/thoughts before putting in too much work (just in case we disagree with you about your suggested addition).

Adnan R.'s picture

Hello community,

I'm Adnan, web and system engineer currently working as an IT admin in a school in Paris. I'm not an expert in Windows Server or AD but we don't have any user management (nor a lot of resources to share) so I was interested in the domain controller template for Proxmox.

Well, I installed it, set it up and was able to join a freshly installed windows 10 VM to the domain. Now, I have access to the home page of the http service, but webmin, web shell, samba, etc… None are accessible 😩

Did I miss something ?

Thanks for your help

Jeremy Davis's picture

Hi Adnan, welcome to TurnKey

FWIW the Samba web based admin is provided by the Samba Webmin module. It is not that useful for AD DC management (IIRC you can restart the service and do a few other bits and pieces). But the recommendation (by Samba) for AD management is via the Windows RSAT tool. I.e. install that on one of your Windows machines and use that to maintain and manage your AD.

Having said that, obviously that doesn't exclude the fact that Webmin and Webshell (aka shellinabox) aren't working (and they should be!). Thanks for providing the info you did. It looks like none of the required services are running?! That is certainly not expected. They should "just work".

You could try check the services for info on why they aren't running, to check each service individually:

systemctl status stunnel4@webmin
systemctl status stunnel4@shellinabox
systemctl status shellinabox
systemctl status webmin

You could also try manually starting them, by re-running the above commands, except replace 'status' with 'start' (or 'restart').

Even if manually starting them works, I'd recommend that you reboot to check that they come back up. If they don't (or they don't start at all) please open a new support thread and share the output of the status commands above. Another thing that might assist is to check for more info from the journal. E.g. to get the last 50 lines of webmin related info from the journal:

journalctl -u webmin -n 50 --no-pager

You can rerun that command substituting 'webmin' for the other named services (e.g. 'shellinabox', etc)

Feel free to write that to a file (i.e. append ' > ~/webmin.log' to the above line and you should find a file called 'webmin.log' in your home dir) and upload it somewhere or attach to the thread (only the first post in a thread allows attachments). Although please explicitly note if you do that (the site has bug that means the attached files aren't publicly visible - although are publicly accessible).

Hopefully that gets you going in the right direction. If not, please do open a new support thread and we'll go from there. Please note that my forum response times are slower than ideal currently, but I will answer all threads (eventually...) and hopefully things should be back to normal (responses within a day or 2) soonish. Please also note that if you are a paid Hub user (or would like paid support - even if self hosting) please reach out to me via support@turnkeylinux.org and we can chat...

Adnan R.'s picture

Hey,

The debug starts early because:

systemctl status stunnel4
~# systemctl status stunnel4
* stunnel4.service
Loaded: masked (Reason: Unit stunnel4.service is masked.)
     Active: inactive (dead)

So stunnel4 is masked, webmin depends on stunnel4, nothing will start and it's pretty normal isn't it?

Jeremy Davis's picture

That is as intended. We mask the generic stunnel service and use a service template (the at symbol denotes a service template - i.e. stunnel4@.service) to provide an individual stunnel instance per service (i.e. stunnel4@webmin & stunnel4@shellinabox).

Please check the status of the individual services as I noted in my previous post.

Hello, I built a new Turnkey Linux server (with Apache and MySQL) on version 17.1. After the build I put in some general configurations such as changing the host (/etc/host), the config file, and a few other general configurations to set different parameters i will be using for connection ( /usr/share/tomcat9/bin/setenv.sh). When I try to connect to the RMI port, I am getting errors that the connection is refused.

I am getting this error both from external (other servers) and from internal (the same Turnkey server). When using Turnkey Linux 16.X that i have worked with in the past and tomcat6 or tomcat7, these configurations have worked and was just wondering if anyone could provide any pointers.

For my "/usr/share/tomcat9/bin/setenv.sh" configuration below is what i have. This is the only aspect i am thinking would cause the issue but i could be blind as well.

export JPDA_ADDRESS=8000
export JPDA_TRANSPORT=dt_socket
export JAVA_OPTS="-Djava.rmi.server.hostname=10.121.80.55 -Xms4096m -Xmx4096m -XX:MaxPermSize=2048m"

Hi Sukardi - your website account is approved.

Please note that if you want a Hub API key (for remote encrypted backups) then please sign up to the TurnKey Hub (the 2 systems have different user databases). If you are self hosting and your data isn't important (e.g. you are just testing) or you have an alternate remote backup regime, then you can skip the API key step at first boot.

Hello,

My name is Michael and I am still learning Linux, but am pretty comfortable with it. I run Proxmox with several containers and a couple VMs. My current project is phasing out Windows products in favor of Linux/Unix based solutions. I have configured a domain controller with via Turnkey and that seems to work well. So, I configured a contained for a file server. It works, but I wanted to bind the file server to the domain controller so that I may use ACLs because there will still be a couple Windows 10 machines on my network.

However, I am encountering issues syncing NTP services to the domain controller via the webmin console. I get the following error:

NTP time synchronization failed : 18 Jul 21:09:28 ntpdate[2943]: Can't adjust the time of day: Operation not permitted

I am also, unable to bind the file server to the domain controller and have been researching it for the past couple days.

I look forward to your approval so that I may seek assistance on the forumns.

Thank you!
