I've just stumbled across TurnKey Linux, and it sounds great, but I have a basic question before getting deep into it. Is every appliance a full stack, including the OS, applications depended on, and the target application? For instance, I'm interested in MediaWiki. Do I install just the MediaWiki appliance, or do I need to install the LAMP appliance first? I see TurnKey Core is included in both appliances, so I assume each appliance is a full stack, but the MediaWiki appliance does not come out and say that. Thanks.

Yes, each appliance is a fully pre-integrated, self contained system. See what is a software appliance.
You can either install the appliances on real hardware, on most types of virtual machines (e.g., VMWare, VirtualBox, Parallels, Xen HVM, KVM), or even host them in the cloud.
Hope the above helps.
