FWIW TurnKey v13.0 is based on Debian Wheezy (aka Debian 7) which I thought should just work OOTB. Perhaps it's worth trying to create a new VM from scratch installing from the ISO (instead of the pre-built VM for VMware/VirtualBox?
Hang on... I just did a real quick google (for "Boot Failed. EFI SCSI Device.") and the first answer that came up suggests that with Server 2012R2 you need to make sure that you are using a Gen 1 VM; apparently the latest Gen 2 VMs will only work with Windows as the guest (hence your error).
Also FYI we are currently working on a new batch of appliances with all updated software. We don't have a firm ETA yet but should be soon...
