Most of what I do is Drupal so I'm glad to be able to help out here.  I'm a core contributor (with a bunch of more talented folks for sure).  

I don't install Drupal sites using Drush.  I've been using it too long to try installing it that way, but I think it's possible.  There are some guides here:

There are actually 2 versions of Drush to consider using.  It might be easier to install Drush with PEAR as they recommend here:

Drush is certainly a very powerful tool.

Jeremy, who is maintaining the current Drupal 6 appliance? It's really not that much different between D6 & D7 other than that with D7 you can safely use PHP 5.3.
